I'm thinking of buying a 2004 certified pre-owned Acura MDX with 48,000 miles on it. I'm a little worried about buying a car with so many miles on it! The powertrain warranty will last until November 2010. But I have no way of knowing whether the previous owner(s) took good care of the car! And how many miles can you typically get out of a MDX? Is the powertrain warranty a good warranty?

48,000 miles in 2-3 years is a pretty high amount, although since they were put on so quickly they were probally highway miles.
Acuras and Hondas can last a long time, and the certified ones should be pretty problem free, and from my experience honda has been very good about their warranty.
