Default CRV: 4WD or 2WD?

Hi,

I'm looking at buying a '98 Honda CRV. The owner doesn't know if it's a 2WD or 4WD, which seems a bit odd to me!

There aren't any markings or stickers on the car which indicate either way, however, the car does have a prop shaft running to the rear wheels. I assume this means it's definitely the 4WD? That might sound like a stupid question but I don't know much about cars.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

They are all wheel drive. They don't have a transfer case so it will always be in 4WD.

There is a very easy way of telling if any car is a fwd or 2wd.
Check for a differential which will look like a lump in the middle of the axel(sometimes a little to the side on the fron axel if it's a four wheel drive). If a car is a 2wd it will have only one either at the rear or front diff. If it's a front wheel drive which is the case in most modern cars, the motor will be mounted on top of it(you can tell if you open the hood) and the rear axel will not have the lump.
Big eighteen wheelers may have two differentials in the 2 rear axels of the horse(tractor).
If you go to Europe, some trucks epsecially quary or military trucks will have 3 diffs.
in that case it will be a 6wheel drive,
I have no idead what would stop that.
But anyway it's that simple, just a matter of looking under the car.
