if the whole instrument panel is consistently one light level (all dimmed the same way), then your dimmer switch may not be working. otherwise, the small lamps/bulbs may have fallen out of position. did this problem start recently?

Alternator going out and the battery is being drained trying to keep up!

Replace alternator soon!

Check battery connections and if they are all good including the grounds to the chassis and block. I would change the battery and alternator.

Yea trust me. It aint fun. I was on my way to school and the alternator died completely and the car just went *put put poof* on the side of the road.

Your battery doesn't only run lights, but also the ignition system in the car. When the alt. dies, the battery runs out, your car goes dead.

I suggest getting it fixed soon.

The battery doesn't run anything except the starter. That's what the alternator does (and charge the battery after you've started the car). Sounds more like a loose connection under the dash or a relay going bad. Check those first. If it was the alternator, the engine would stall out at idle, all the warning lights would come on, and the car would be really hard to start.

Whit, could you help us diagnose the problem?

Is it just that the lights are dim, or are you having problems starting the car as well? How well is the car idiling -- does it idle well at startup or is it "jumpy"? Are there certain times when the lights are dim (startup) or is it all the time?
