Dealer Service? - HondaClub.com

My Prelude has 48K miles, and I want to get my brake fluid, transmission fluid, and cooling stytems flushed out and refilled. Im wondering if the manual is correct in that I must only use genuine Honda fluids. It mentions risk of brake system corrosion, affected transmission shift quality, and cooling system corrosion, malfuntion or failure. Im wondering how exactly accurate that is. Is it just to make us support the dealers? The dealers charge about twice as much to do these services as the other shops ($109 VS $50 for cooling system flush). Will I be alright to use a local shop?

Well, just in my familiy's case, we have always taken our Hondas to local shops for the kind of services you mention, and there has never been a problem. Now, I'm not telling you to take my word for it and not do your own investigating because I wouldn't want anything to happen to your car. I'm just saying that in our situation we never had any problems, and all the cars (except the 96 Accord - but it had issues) have lasted a long time and run well.

Sometimes if you get a package deal for services for specific mileages there's a significant discount involved, and more services provided, such as fluid changes. I'm about to get the 105,000 service and it looks pretty good.

i work at a dealership as a tech i think that when it comes to service you get what you pay for you can always buy honda fluids then have an independent shop put those fluinds in your car i would beware of non honda brake and trans fluids especially if your car has atts

I've been taking my lude to a local shop for three years and have had no trouble. In fact, in some regards I've had less. I get treated like I have a brain and if something's wrong they explain everything to me as if I were a patient at a doctor's office.

I think you should just buy the fluids at an autozone or even in my case have found them at wal-mart and get someone trusted to put it in.

Find a Prelude specific fourm and get all the weights and things for your car then buy them or write them down and give them to a shop and see if they have them in stock. With the S2000 there is a common Honda differential fluid that will blow it up when used in the S.

I use www.Hardtopguy.com for my fluids, but they may be different on a Prelude.
