Default DEER wrecks... not good !!!

well, after years and over a million miles of driving, I finally had my 1st experience hitting a deer. always heard stories from others, and always imagined what it would be like, and had many close calls... but the rush of those split seconds between the time that you notice the soon-to-be carcass and the actual impact are heart-stopping !!!

i personally despise animal cruelty, and for similar reasons I can't bring myself to comfortably go fishing. my point here is that I hate inflicting pain on animals... BUT in this instance, this stupid deer deserved to die !!!

i'll post pics later today...

That's no fun. I was in WV two years ago and was driving my dad and my friend back to our campsite in my dad's car. It was down a long, twisitng road, with lots of blind corners. Anyway, I went around this tight hairpin and just as I began to accelerate out of it, a deer ran across the road in front of me. I slammed on the brakes but hit it anyway. It somersaulted over the front of the car, hit the ground and ran off. We were only doing about 25 when I hit it. Amazingly, it only knocked out the grille of the car and the Toyota logo (which ended up being over $100 brand new). It also put a small dent in the hood, but it wasn't the first (and it's not the last, we live under a very old and unhappy tree). I was going slow, but my dad was still very pissed at me. I doubt he would have done any better.

That's my story. I think I was one of the lucky ones. A few months later, a deer ran in front of me, but if I had slammed on my brakes, his buddy would have rammed the side of my car.

I haven't Hit a deer yet but i have hit his bigger cousin (the moose). Wasn' fun and the car that i did have will never be the same again. I can tell you this for sure. I don't think I have ever stood on the brake pedal as hard as I did that night. I was heading from Maine to Up-state NY to visit my brother at Ft. Drum. it was about 2:30, 3:00 am and I was flying down the road. I had come up around one corner and over the little hill and my eye kind of caught the glimpse of something, but by the time I could tell what it was, it was WAY too late. I tried to move to the other side of the road but that **** bull walked forward and by that time it was too **** late. I knew it wasn't going to be pretty and I was practically standing on the break pedal, but all to quick it was over. I hit that moose with my 86 monte carlo SS in the rear legs, spung him around in the air (or what seemed to be a flying moose) but he came down and when he did he crushed the front end of that car. needless to say I was scared (should have worn brown pants). lucky for me, it's been my only hit (knock on wood).

Jesus. You were lucky.

Speaking of moose, did anyone see the Alaska episode of Myth Busters? They tested whether slowing down or speeding up would save your life if you hit a moose. As expected, slowing down caused less damage to the car and less injury to the passengers. They tried a CRX going as fast as they could (about 80 mph) and it nearly tore the roof off.

I hit one or should I say a deer hit my 84 civic hatchback about 4 years ago. My step dad was driving in front of me in his brand new car and a deer ran out in front of him but didn't hit it and then two ran out in front of me. I slammed on the brakes and missed the first one but the 2nd jumped over my car and didn't make it. Left a huge dent in the top of my car and flipped the deer over in mid air and it landed hard but got up and ran off. scared the hell out of me.

About 6 months ago I hit one doing 60mph in my ford E250 work van and it destroyed the van and the deer. Set off both air bags. That one hurt. It happened so fast I didn't even have time to hit the brakes. My boss came out to inspect the van and give the mandatory drug test(I passed) and couldn't believe how much damage it did. Took a body shop 3 months to fix it.

big animals do some crazy stuff! my father use to work a paper route and one morning a few years back he was doing his run and a horse jumped over it's fence and ran into the side of his Jeep Wrangler. It left a huge dent where it's head hit right by the passanger side mirror. The horse didn't die, just knocked out. It got more interesting when the police came to do the report on the accident. They wouldn't believe that the horse hit my father, they wanted to know how my father hit the horse. my father with his quick witt replied with a (and i don't know how) straight face. "well i was driving down the road sideways, saw the horse and just stepped on it!" it was all taken care of and the farmer was pissed he had to pay for all the work to be done to the jeep, but still another big animal, another crazy stunt

My dad nailed a deer in his '05 accord about 6 months after he bought the car, he was on the interstate and didn't see it at all. 70mph, between the headlights and over the car, completely over, no damage to the windshield or roof, and the headlights still kind of worked.

He got lucky, the smaller stage of the dual stage airbag deployed and he was able to keep driving until it was safe to pull over. Over all it resulted in $10k in damage and about 4 months of repair. The car still runs like new (80k on it now).
