Does anyone here use satellite based high speed internet?
I am thinking of changing from cable to the dish and want to know about anyone's personal experiences with satellite internet.

Go for fiber optic. I have that at home. Even the wireless is quick. Plus you can get tv and phone too.

Fiber optic is ok its a tad faster but you have to realize that your internet signal is not actually entirely fiber optic. Your line is only fiber optic from the main line up to the PED. Unless your backbone has been put in within the last 5 years your actuall connection is 95% coax. But if I had a choice over satellite or land line I would go landline.
There are antennas you can purchase that will allow you to leech internet from anyone with an unsecured wireless connection in your area. |

This is right up my alley! Satnet is good if you are willing to pay for the cost. Yes there will be some draw backs when it comes to weather like rain, snow, sandstorms (if you life in a desert climate). the good is that you can use it just about anywhere as long as you are in the Sat's footprint. however, your link speed will suffer. Again thats all depends on price too. Fiber is a great way to get a LOT faster speed. Most places that are offering a fiber connection already have a fiber backbone in place. If it's not, they won't offer. It would cost the company too much money to run coax and then place media converters at every location to run just a short fiber cable to the customers home. The main thing you should consider is; What do you use the net for? Most applications DSL works just fine (gaming, chatting, video chat, VoIP. . .) and the price has come down a lot. My suggestion, weigh the options and go for what you think is best.
