Outputs are fried, possibly from a short

Throw out the old stereo. Anything that happened to it has made it worthless. Then find the short (easier said then done). Start by looking for melted/blackened wires. Those will be the ones that heated up from the short. Then find which one is grounding and fix it. And replace all the burnt wiring, because fixing it a second time won't be fun either.

Couldn't've said it better myself.

to check for shorts in the speakers the easiest way is with an ohm meter. Just when you disconnect the radio use it to test each par of speaker wires.

If it was a short in the speaker, wouldn't the speaker have burnt up instead of the head unit? In a '92, it's probably some wire that's frayed and grounded to the frame.

Thanks for your kind words Drift. I really appreciate them.

I have seen blown speakers that have caused a short and fried a head unit.

Check the wiring, the speakers and I believe the unit is toast.
