LS/VTEC will work and be fine unless you add nitrous/turbo/supercharger. Then you need to beef up the block. If you have some extra money a full engine swap is easier. A B18C1 runs from $1500-$3000. A head and parts start at around $300. You need a lot of little things. The SCC guide is a good one and has the entire parts list.

Ive seen a lot of people have problems with LSVTEC, but that was because they didnt spend the time to do it right. If you do it right then you will have no problem and itll be pretty beast to. But it is very possible

Onto the question....building a lsvtec is simple, your going to get what you put into it. Meaning,if you half ass the job,or just slap it together, your going to get a half ass motor. If you take the time to do things right, and build it right, your going to have a good motor. You cant just simply take a vtec head and slap it on a non vtec block and call it a day. There is alot you have to do to make it reliable. I could sit here and either A) do a write up for you,or B) link up a how to page, but i dont think this is going to be your best bet. To be honest (and not to sound mean, dont take anything i say personal),but it seems like you are either A) new to the scene, or B) dont have alot of wrench time behind you. I would STRONGLY discourage you from doing this, and attempting yourself. This is not something to be taken lightly, and not something that is easy. A little mistake and you could be looking for a whole new motor.... If your serious about getting it done,id go to a local shop and get some quotes. You might find it possibly easier/cheaper just to go get a gsr longblock, depends on what deals you can find. But like said, they can be reliable motors, and VERY rewarding,if built right. I speak from experience having a "stock" boosted ls-v,and now a fully built ls-v. Even though i STRONGLY discourage you from attmepting this yourself, here is a write up. Assembling an LS/VTEC - HondaSwap Forums Whatever you do,good luck....
