Basically, from what I understand, it lets more air into the engine in both intake and exhaust.
The old systems used oil pressure to activate. I think the new ones use some sort of computer system. for a complete understanding go to http://auto.howstuffworks.com/question229.htm

There are VTEC sohc engines, like that in the del sol si
I think you have to replace the head, which involves a lot of other work as well. The best way to get VTEC is to do an engine swap, or just buy a car with VTEC in it.

yeah i was just confused as to what it was, i don't plan on doing anything further with my honda. the way it is is the way its gonna stay. i just bought a real nice golf 4 door with a vr6 swap. it'll whoop on anything. you name it... ferrari's, porche, lambo's, lol. jk. i wish that would be awesome.but the car has a real nice amount of power. 190 whp. 0-60 in my guess of 7-9 seconds, ive gotten it up to 160, got scared, and slowed down. lol it was in low RPM 5th gear and still had power to keep accelerating.

VTEC changes the cam profiles on each cam by a computer controlled sensor. You do need to have enough oil pressure to be able to engage VTEC and if the air is to dense VTEC will not engage either. Howstuffworks.com is the best place to look for your understanding. I believe they have a diagrap of how it works.
