I've been looking at purchasing a del sol, and I've been researching engine swaps. Is it better to get a cheaper del sol and put in a B16A2 ($3000 + $3000 + ?), or get a one with the DOHC VTEC. ($7000)
Part of this is cost, how much would it cost for a shop to install a B16A2 in a D del sol? I also noticed that auto del sols are ususally cheaper, since new motors come with transmission, would it matter if the car is an auto or manual? (I'm assuming the prices at passwordjdm are competitive)

to install and get all the parts about 800 to 1500 depending on the parts and the shop. It also would matter on if you want a manual or an auto for price, just stick with what you have unless you want to go from auto to manual then add another 1000 or so to the equation. Plus i think you would be much happier spending the money and time to just swap in a DOHC VTEC....you will be much happier.

Hmotorsonline.com will give you a B16A for around 2500 which is a very fast motor. Then another 800 or so for a shop to put it in. It will cost a little more if its auto because the shop has to cut into the fire wall to put the clutch pedal in and stuff.

I might have agreed with you before driving the s2k, but I think VTEC is the way to go, and even if it was slower, I think a high reving VTEC car is a lot more fun. VTEC is great for using the low end to cruise and then grabbing the high end power when you want it.
and I think its more powerful in a same size engine |

Please know your facts before you give a member an answer that wrong. The only one where the mounts will line up is the SI which is pretty rare. It will have a B16A2, which is a VTEC motor and faster than any B18 (1.8 liter) that you will get from an Acura. If you wanna go fast its gonna have to be a S2000 motor or JDM Honda motors (such as the CRX SI-R II, which is the Del Sol in Japan; or the Honda Integra motor B18C) Del Sol seemed more roomy than the S the last time i sat in one. |

to add TJ213 also said money was an issue and the itr motor with trany, ecu, mounts, harness, etc. is easily 8000 plus. Where as the b16a2 is half that. Plus there are pros and cons between the two. The ITR may have more power and liters and torque but it is slower to rev up verses the b16(stock on both). the redlines are about the same and engauge about the same. the weight is less in the b16 than the ITR or b18. And to keep a well balanced car you pay close attention to that stuff or the front will drive horribly and could possibley put excessive where on all the components in the front of the car. So yes the b18 may be much better when you look at in on the outside and all the stuff that is possible to do to it, but the b16 is just as great with the possibilities but if you look closer you will see where some might find it to be a superior engine. The only way to make the b16 the best is to go for the CTR or get a b16 and do a custom CTR build on it and balance it. That to me is the best engine both for cost and effenciency.
