typically to take a head off you need to remove the spark plugs and wires, the valve cover, and inside the valve cover there are head bolts that mount the head to the block. Just remove those and you are done

is your oil all milky? light brown? opaqe? then your head gasket it probably blown, and you need to get the head resurfaced at the minimum. but if your oil is clean, do a compression check if it all checks out your problems probably lie elsware, also buy a haynes or factory manual for you motor and your car, they are quite handy to have, and will show you in great detail how to take apart and re-assemble your motor/car. all i can say is dont cheez out on a Torque wrench and get OEM gaskets, and you sould be fine.

I have to say I disagree for once. The information is correct but there are many more steps required. You need to grab a Hains manual on your car/ a car with your motor (any auto parts store has them) and there is a very specific order in removing those bolts or you can warp things under the head.

but is said typically there are many other items to do such as sensors etc. but the rough idea to remove one is like what i said. And not exactally in that order either.

when the car is cold take the radiator cap off, then start it, if a consistant amount of bubbles pop up then your head gasket is toast.... done and done
