So tonight I was out driving on a country backroad where I live and decided to open her up. I was doin about 110-115 for a little while(cuz I'm young and dumb), and stopped cuz i didn't feel safe since it was hill after hill and my civic felt like it was about to take flight (that and with my luck a deer would suicide into my car). So that brings me to my first question which is does anyone know when the governer kicks in for the 5th gen Civics? I've only been able to get it up to 115 on that same road, and like i said i don't feel to safe. Then my second question is when i got home there was a wierd smell like i had just burnt out in my car and was wonering if anyone knows what from, this never happened with my Dodge Neon after runnin it at high RPM's so i don't know what it is.

I don't think there is a governor. It just can't physically go any faster, either through gearing, or aero, you've topped out the poor thing.
Smells need to be described. "Weird smell" can mean a lot of things. For example, I've been eating beans for the last 2 days, so there are lots of weird smells in my room (seriously). Is the smell sweet? Does it smell like gas? Exhaust? Something burning? Melted wire? Rubber? There are about a dozen different smells cars can omit, so you really need to narrow it down.

lol i think it can go faster, but i won't try that. like i said i don't feel to safe goin 115 anyways. maybe if i found a straight abandoned road i would. the smell smelt like burnt tires (hence i said smelt like i was burning out) and maybe a little bit of melted wires, i really don't think so though.

I think its just possibly from just running that fast at a high RPM which heated up the rubber hoses and all under the hood.

Sounds about right. Cars don't like getting run that hard.

If it smells like burned rubber, it is obviously your tires. If it smells like somebody farted, could be your clutch.
Seriously, never go that fast, especially on such uneven terrain. You are lucky you didn't kill yourself, or at least your car. |

Honda's are addicting

I seriously doubt it was the tires, at that kind of speed the engine dosent have the power to spin them and burn rubber. Instead the rubber on the belts gets heated and burns, along with some rubber hoses that are to close to the heat coming off the engine. Think about it, the belt has little to no grip on the metal pulleys, so they slip slightly at high rpms. Keep it at the high rpm for a little bit, and add in the heat from the engine and from the belt slip you get that funky burning rubber smell. I've busted a few belts at races this way.

Also the stock hoses will begin to melt under that kind of heat. In older cars, it may even be the sound deadening tar burning a bit (my Integra's exhaust gets really hot and it gtes toasty inside).
