89 DX headliner help - HondaClub.com

While cleaning the interior of the car today the headliner in my 89 CRX DX has all but disintegrated,

I applied a tad to much pressure and tore right through it almost like paper and after pulling the rest of it down I found that there is no actual headliner panel.

The fabric that was up there had been stretched and held in place by plastic poppers. Id like to replace it and am wondering if anyone has gone through this process. I cant seem to find headliner panels that are compatible with my make and year and that have sunroof hole cut out. Ive googeld it to death and can seem to find anything helpful. Im guessing I could grab one for a different make and year and cut out the center for the sun roof but am unsure which headliners would be compatible. Any thoughts?

Like I said before, I have an '89 DX that I am stripping. I don't have a sunroof, and the interor is pretty ratty, but it will work. If anything, you can cover a replacement panel with a new piece of cloth. Remember, you are working on a 20 year old car. There are certain concessions you have to deal with.

It sounds like someone already took out the headliner and replaced it with whatever they had lying around. When I replaced my Integra's hatch, I had to remove the headliner. It was basically a big piece of particle board with a piece of vinyl glued to it. Mind you this was a 1995, not an '89, but the design hasn't changed that much. When I get to actually taking apart the interior, I will let you know more about my CRX and what is salvageable. That should be happening within about three or four weeks (when we hear about our acceptance to the 24 Hours Of Lemons).

As for other cars, any CRX from 1988 to 1991 will work. The older CRXs (1987 and earlier) are too small and the Civics from that cycle are too long. You could always trim a Civic headliner to fit, but I don't know if the sunroof will line up. The front of the cars are mostly the same, so I don't see why this wouldn't work. If you go this route, measure twice, cut once.

I have a 91 DX Hatch, and my headliner is vinyl. It has held up very good...I don't know if CRX did any vinyl headliners, but you might see if you could find something like that.

After pulling down the headliner that was up there I found that the original headliner (Grey vinyl) had been hacked and slashed to fit in the sunroof. I went to the local Pick and pull this last weekend to find a replacement headliner but the only CRX they had on the entire lot was already picked clean.

So i'm looking into building a new headliner out of gator foam or something similar. If it doesn't work out then Ill probably have to go have it done professionally.

Although I did get my new entertainment system installed. 15" Orion sub, 2 6" orion HCCA's for the front 2 coax for the rear tweets a 2200watt Phoenix Gold amp and a Panasonic TFT DVD head unit. So im amped about that.

I have a new Motor on order and am waiting on funds to get Motor and suspension all done at the same time.

So, I got tired of looking at bare metal on the interior so I grabbed some black suede and a headliner out of an 91 SI, after hacking the headliner up to make room for my sun roof and gluing the suede to the headliner I have a new and improved headliner. Looks rather snazzy. My Orion 15" died over the weekend. first one coil went out and then the other. Which leaves me boggled because I had the gain turned down almost all the way when this happened.

I read somthing the other day about DX and HF's having issues with irradic voltage problems. Has anyone else herd about or know anything about it? If so any solutions?

Your speakers have shorted somewhere. That may be why you have erratic engine trouble (it sounds strange, but if you see how cars are wired then you can figure out why something in the audio can be screwing up the engine. You just might need to get under the dash after all).

Its got to be electrical then. My Sub blew out at not even 1/4th power. So looks like I have a fun weekend project ahead of me.
