Default Hey guys, thinking about turboing my stock D16Y7, recommendable or not?

Old time user here. Anyways, I am thinking about turboing my stock motor. Should I do it or is not recommendable?

I would personally do a B-series swap other than turbo your present motor.

I am more interested in working with the D-series than the B. Take it as a begineer's project. I know little about them, so I might as well mess around with my D16.

Then go for the turbo. Just don't over boost the stock internals and you will be fine. Good luck

Default my 2 cents

if you really want to blow it...stay under 15 psi or so or you will literally blow it...If I were you I would either swap it out with a larger motor or tear it out, rebuild it with beefier internals and then slap on a supercharger!

This is your first project car? Don't turbo it. Learn the basics before going all out with a turbo. Once you know some more about tuning, then you can swap motors and/or go turbo. When you are ready for that, check out the article I wrote on turboing NA cars.

I'd say engine swap first. Then worry about turbo.

Basics are usually intake, headers, exhaust.... just basic turner mods to learn a little about the car.

i thought the same thing you are with my first car. I strapped a turbo onto my '98 impreza 2.5RS. It ran great for like 4k, then it blew peices... I don't agree with doing all the basci mods first, cause if your still not happy your out of alot of cash. Just do it right, rebuild it with the right parts, and don't boost it more than 15psi anyways. But remember once you car has more power you'll soon need to replace alot of parts. The tranny will go first, clutch, flywheel, and gears. Thats alot of money to rebuild with parts that can handle the new power. You may have to replace the axles, and new brakes would be a good idea with the new power. Not to mention suspension and sway bars to fight the torque steer. But its your choice to turbo it. With a swap however the only problem is the last, torque steer. What i'm getting at is, tune your ride, but before you do think about it. And your car may be alot faster than you think, go to a SCCA novice school. Learning to drive your car on an AutoX corse when its stock is hard, but rewarding. It will also show exactly what needs to be mod-ded on your car. Take it one step at a time.
