I am sure this has been kicked around before but is an early oil/filter change still recommended around the 600 mile mark? The handbook says no, but what is done in the real world?

No. Machining clearances are tighter and quality control is stricter today than before. So, less wear occurs on an engine (it still wears, just not as much), and fewer particles come out. You should be fine sticking with the factory schedule.
