Buy a service manual (I prefer the OEM, some people like Haynes. Haynes is cheaper, but the OEM won't have any mistakes). Nobody films step-by-step instructions like that.

uh...

watch spike tv on saturday mornings for horsepower block...

the shows work on muscle cars but the principal is the same...just fewer pistons...

they show all the time about completely tearing the motor apart and rebuilding it...

like i said...the only difference is the displacement and # of cylinders...all motors are just overplummed air compressors!

Yeah but every motor has certain specs on how much to tighten and the clearances for the piston and the such. If you've never replaced pistons before, it is probably not a good idea to do it on your own. You mess one up and you can easily destroy your entire engine.

well that is where the manual comes in...with watching some one do it and then a model specific manual almost anyone should be able to do it

And I repeat, if you've never done it...
If you've seen someone do it, then fine.

well I had only watched it done on tv and after reading the manual (a few times) I successfully rebuilt the motor in my Alfa Romeo...its now 16 years later and I keep in touch with the new owner and she still runs like a champ...

All it takes is time and the ability to read and follow directions. The manuals they make now could teach almost anyone to be a mechanic!

I am not disagreeing at all. I think it's great to learn how to do stuff on your own. Just some people have no idea what they are getting into until they are halfway through. It's happened to me and my friends. A little background goes a long way.
