Angry 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid Transmission Failure.

2003 Honda Civic Hybrid Transmission Failure.

Bought 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid in 2005. Clean record.

At 44,000 miles transmission went dead per my Honda dealer service department. Replacement $3,500 for refurbished one (told they do not make original ones which raises questions re quality). No advance indication of potential failure.

Why such a short life-span for transmission? Should I replace or sell? Such a costly car!

Oh wow, that's a huge hassle and a ton of money for a refurbished part. Some people worry about hybrids for this very reason. Will they last as long as regular cars, or fall apart earlier than expected? They haven't been around long enough to really say. That does seem like a very short life span on a transmission, however, you couldn't find a car of the comparable value for what you will pay for the transmission. I would keep it this time, and then if something else goes wrong pretty soon, get rid of it. It may just be the car.

That is an awful thing to happen. I don't think I have ever heard of a transmission going wrong that soon. I think the two options I would look at are contacting Honda or even getting rid of the car before something else does go wrong.

wow 44k miles and the thing is shot!!! honda trannies never had any big problems. whats wrong with the tranny did they tell you anything. mom and pops shops usually tell you whats wrong before they do the work. that or call every junk yard possible and you can probably get one for less then 1500 if you can find one
