its pretty funny you are an ex mechanic yet you could not install your own catback exhaust, one of the easiest things do do.
3-3-07 Here we see the Nopi brand "Stealth" cat-back exhaust. When looking into cat-backs, it helps to go to shows to get a feel of the different sounds. With its mellow deep tone and stainless steel finish this system was a steal for only $300 installed! 3-3-07 Here is a closer look at the exhaust that was installed by SCC! If you are ever in the Savannah Georgia area stop by and check them out. It will be well worth it! i copied these from your web site. http://www.my2002ex.mysite.com/ |

how could u say that synthetic will mess up ur car if u switch after 5000 miles thats basicly saying that u cant run synthetic in after any cars breakin period, even though most brands say to switch after the 5k breakin period. i would switch, it will defenintly help ur car to run harder and longer. as for the filter i have always used a honda filter but it is realy what u prefer they are all pretty mutch the same. mobil 1 is what i would recomend as a tech.

Alright I understand everything that you just said (EyesofFreeDom). I do have a Question, and corect me if i'm wrong, but with newer cars don't they have tighter clearances? that won't let oil seep out of gaskets?

Well EFR I never said I couldnt install it. That is where your own assumption has betrayed you. I...at that time...worked two full time jobs and have three kids so when the shop offered to install it for me...why not? Saves me time from doing it myself! I dropped it off...went to work and then picked it up when I got off of work finished. So you might want to do a little more research before you try to pop off again!
Jcool...they do have as you put it tighter clearances. However the seals are still the same seals used for the last 30+years...same rubber or plastic composites...so they still act the same. And no matter high tight of a fit when it comes to metal...any kind of metal regardless of the alloys installed...will expand and contract due to heating and cooling...that is where the tradition oil has one benefit over synthetic. And to all the others, I have never said synthetic was bad or convention was better...The original post is asking about switching...and I gave my advice...if you dont want to follow it fine....you have to pay for your motor down the road. Not me. If you buy a new car and switch as soon as you get it then fine...just dont by a car with 80,000 miles and expect everything to be okay because you will be in for a rude awakening...but some lessons are best learned on you own.

yes newer cars do have tighter clearences but synthetic or no, the weight is what your talking about. for example older cars may use 10w-30 or 10-40 because of wear over time there are bigger gaps. mosts new cars use 5-20, because of the need to fill the tighter gaps.sythetic oil just helps to lubricate and reduce friction which means less heat. that is why it is recomended for harsh driveing conditoins.

OP, you should be fine with switching now, pretty much everybody here agrees that your miles are low enough that it won't be a problem.
Off topic arguing stops here, personal attacks are not needed, and if you have a question about changing oil types in a high milage car or would like to discuss it please create a new thread. Any more posts containing personal attacks or off topic arguing will be deleted

wow i got some high and heavy miles on my little baby and i use syth oil along with lucas. i have been hearing nice things about royal purple. as far as filters all depends. i have seen two different filters.
standard filters ( see any shelf in the world ) and one way oil filters with a check valve. i have used the one-way check's in some engines with problems and it has helped prevent ( further damage) but honestly i like the factory filter. my best suggestion would be to try a few different ones and find the onw that performs the best for you. i had the best results with my 91' once i switched to 5w20 w/lucas then switched from 5w30 to 5w20 in the tranny everything seemed to go better had a little more power but now that i am using full syth i am stuck with it. lol i dont really mind it at all.

With 177k I would recommend a detergent oil to help remove some of the sludge and deposits that have built up over time...and I would go with a 5w-30 or even better 10w-30...because the wear on the motor...especially the rings...you will need a thicker oil.
Something like Pennzoil with the strong detergents for one or two oil changes to help clean out the motor with a good 2 micron filter should do it,...then switch to something like valvoline max life which is formulated for high mileage engines...just stay away from castrol...thier formulas vary wildly...but keep using the 2 micron filters to help pull all the extra gunk out of the pan and system.

I have a 93 Civic Si - original owner - switched to synthetic at 30,000 miles and now have 237K on the car, does not burn, use, or leak any oil.
Mobil 1 (regular blend - NOT high mileage) 5W-30. |
