Default 95 Civic Speedometer Problem

The speedometer works intermittently more not than, I can be driving along and it suddenly will drop to zero and may stay that way or may resume working - the odometer also stops. I have replaced the Speed Sensor - no change - Suggestions? Is this a common problem?

Default More info please?

Do you mean the ignition coil? Who found this? How much did the coil; cost? From looking at the shop manual for the 95 Civic, I didn't see any relationship.

Thanks for your reply

Jim

One of two things...(1) worn or loose speedometer cable or (2) most likely the little gear in the tranny that actually turns the cable me be getting worn out. On some cars it is simple to replace by pulling a little cover off and pulling it out...some cars very difficult because the tranny has to be pulled out of the car to get to the gear.

Disconnect the cable at the tranny and hook it into a drill. Turn the drill about medium speed while a buddy watches the speedo...if it mooves smothly and never fails then it is the gear...if it hesitates and starts and stops then the cable is going bad.

95 civic speedo is all electronic, no cable. Mine is doing the same thing, i took the cluster out and cleaned all the connections with a pencil eraser, then contact cleaner. 90% better, still flakes out a little (once in 100 miles or so). I am going to get another speedo from local junk yard. I will let you know.

really...

my 92 had a cable...go figure...

if it is cable or electric there is still a gear set or sensor on the tranny...thats how it knows how fast it is going...by tranny rpms...
