I checked the oil in my 07 Civic Si and it was very low and pretty dirty. The oil life indicator is at 40%. I added a quart to it. I'm going to take it to the dealer for an oil change and probably ask for Mobile 1 Synthetic.
The dealer told me last time that SI's burn off oil. Has anyone else had this experience? It seems awfully low. |

Yes, but it was below the lower marker and I don't drive it very hard, generally. I've heard that this engine tends to burn a little oil, but this seems like a lot. I contacted Honda CS and they had a dealer do an oil consumption test.
How does checking my oil frequently and wanting to know for sure why it's low make me a moron? What kind of car do you have? |

Alright, I take back the moron comment. My bad. Take a look at this...
Honda recommends non aggressive driving for the first 1000km. This is not so much for the engine's sake, but rather setting the clutch and brakes. Owners should also keep an eye on their engine oil levels especially if VTEC is consistently exploited. Although not much compared to the RX-8, the Si is expected to burn some oil before the car's electronic service minder demands an oil change. Using 5W-30 oil, Honda says they deliver this car with non synthetic oil to etch the cylinder walls before converting to the smoother, more durable synthetic blends in future oil changes. This helped me out, hope it helps you. Here is the link to the entire article. canada.com Autos/Cars - New/Used Car Classifieds and Review OBTW I have an 07 Honda Si |

First of all, I'm way past the break-in point. I have almost 6k miles on the car and two oil changes.
Yes, I was very gently with the car for the first 800 miles or so. Also, why not just point out this article instead of calling your fellow forum member and Honda enthusiast a MORON? |

Are you verifying the oil level everytime you have the oil changed so you know where it is at?
At first I thought you were one of those people that didn't understand the oil life deal. I have seen so many people on different forums believe they only have 40% of there oil left in the engine and add a couple qts. Oops my bad! |

Guys, just a word of advise for both parties here:
1) Please don't jump the gun and start calling someone a moron. It's rude, not needed, and will be dealt with in future instances. 2) There are people out here that are quick to jump on things. Sometimes that is just the way they come across through the keyboard. We are all here for the same reason, our cars. Let's not let attitudes get in the way. Every one of us has a different attitude, we may not always agree with each others views and actions. In other words, try not to be so fast to attack, and try not to be so fast to defend. Things can be taken the wrong way in this vast land of internet, let's not allow small things such as this ruin the good thing we have here. This matter seems to have straightened itself out, there were apologies, and what not. Let's leave it at that. Thank you. Neil C.

also, being an ex mechanic (retired because tired of burning my hands on Ford P.O.S.') it is an odd statement about swapping your oil from non to synthetic. The reason your engine has an 800-1000 mile breaking in period is to besure everything seats properly and to set the pace of the next 100,000 miles (or 10,000 if you have a Ford!) You should never ever change from synthetic to non synthetic or vice versa for any reason UNLESS you are installing a freshly rebuilt motor with ALL NEW components! The Vtec "oil burn' should fade after the break in period. If it continues to lose oil keep a very close eye on it! I would recommend every morning! Also keep an eye out for any recall notices and or any funny sounds or smells. It sounds like to me what happened is some moron who worked at the dealership was unloading the car and dogged it a bit throught the parking lot! Doing this can actually bend a valve when the Vtec tries to kick in. That will cause oil loss until fixed (forever!). Exactly how many miles was on it when you bought it! It only takes about 10 to ruin an engine and a bigger moron can do it in less! I have seen a 05 V Spec SER Sentra with 7 miles and a fried motor! That was disgusting! ![]()
