well, I gotta say... there is no reason you cannot sound good with a low budget... just buy used gear. I have a system built up on virtually all used gear - and it bumps. You will be surprized to find what people are selling cheap....

Kicker ZR120 (sweet fookin amp here)... $50 (I paid 10 too much but it came with the remote unit that SiGirl describes)...
Alpine V12 - (4 channel, C-L-E-A-N) -- $60 bucks
Sony Head Unit (cheepie from circuit city) - $80
Dual Voice Coil 10" subs in box (some cheap brand, say extreme on the cone)... $65 bucks....

Just look on local boards for used gear. Ask the person if they have ever gone into "thermal shutdown"... if they dont know what it is , ask them "has it ever been playing (bumping along) and shut off by itself"..... do your best to determine if they are being honest (best to ask face to face)... and always low ball. Used gear is not really worth much -- so you should not really have to pay more than the $50-$80 range for a quality piece of gear.

When buying used, stay with big name brands (alpine, kicker, memphis, JL Audio, Boston Acoustics, Polk Audio) if you can - they wil give you the best results. For the door speakers and deck speakers - it's best to pop the $100 for new "fresh" speakers... with a good amp you dont have to buy anytying bud the "mid" quality alpine/polk/kicker......

IMHO

P.S. how do you get a member tag?

my husband had bought 2 P3 12in subwoofers and a 3,000 watt amp so he gave me the system he had in his car with an Alpine 12in Dual Voice Coil subwoofer and a 1000 watt amp by Kenwood. So theres no reason not buy used, just as good as new

Well, Bentley is a part of VW. this world is crazy

we should start a thread listing car companies and their subsidiaries, I think some people will be surprised.

I have the Sony all around in my teg. I like the sound of the speakers and the style they added to the car but the head unit stopped playing cd's 2 weeks after installation. After 2 weeks without a radio waiting for it to be repaired I haven't had a problem since. I personally like the pioneer system I had in my civic. Pioneer seems to consistently come up with top of the line head units. In my experience they've been the best. I was at the Funk Master Flex car show this weekend and the craziest head unit I've ever seen was the Power Acoustik PTID-4006T. Google it!

Talking The Set-UP!

Sony got a new line out. Their new sub can handle some serious power with the right box(proboxrocks.com) Awsome! For the buck sony is the way to go. Much respect to sonythey came a long way. Keep this in mind and I know all the pros will agree: "IT'S ALL IN THE BOX TOO! Mixed-match For a cheap buck go kenwood ei or excellon series. They put out an ear jigging sound to complement your bass which is the perfect system: Clarity and Bass at a equal is best.
