Two interesting articles that I really like. The first is a must-read for any enthusiast, especially any one who wants to race, even an amateur (especailly so). The second is just cool, definitely worth reading, and yet another reason why street racing is dumb. I'm trying to find the 7 Rules of Mt Akina by Dave Coleman (another awesome read), but haven't had any luck (found a drifting site that had the article posted, but it wouldn't load).

Ya know it is ironic cause I am thinking of building a 5th gen hatch for SCCA racing out at Roebling Road...like 15 minutes from my house!

I found the 7 Rules Of Mt. Akina by Dave Coleman (former SCC tech Editor, current Mazdaspeed engineer). Here is the shortened version:

Rule #1: There is no reset button. Real driving takes real skill, not bouncing off other cars/the wall. And unlike NFS, there is no repair marker (I really wish there was, it would have made my life easier).
Rule #2: Don't race. Driving and worrying about winning together might kill you. See how many people wreck just driving normally? Now add the whole stress of negotiating the touge with someone else breathing down your neck and you may find out how true rule #1 is.
Rule #3: Respect the line: See those yellow lines? Netwon's Third law of Physics says that a body hauling ass hitting another body head on hurts like a mutha. Fortunately there is a little yellow line that keeps most other bodies away from you. Keep to it even when you can see the other side, because your reflexes will always keep you on your side when you get caught in a panic.
Rule #4: Late apex everything. it's worth the 10th of a second to keep living. Driving new roads means you don't know what's coming next. Driven the same stretch everyday all your life? Real roads change daily and if you treat them like they don't it tends to hurt.
Rule #5: Left foot brake. Takes some practice, but it'll make you faster and keep you from Newton's wrath when some idiot is in blatant disregard of the third rule.
Rule #6: Read ahead. The next hundred feet of road are more important than what's under your hood. Even the cars with the best brakes need some room to slow down.
Rule #7: Drive humbly. The second you think how great you are rule #1 usually comes into play soon after.

If you drive lwith these in mind all the time, whether on the street or the track, you will be able to avoid about 80% of the problems you could face. I wish someone would start making kids read these to get their licenses.

i've been an engineer for 15 years, and I've never heard this basic principle stated this way! lol

cuz thats where mt Akina is
and mt Akina was the mountian where drifting was always taking place at around 2-6 in the morning

I know this because i saw the movie Initial D haha

No, he's from Cali. Mt. Akina is the nickname he gave the local mountain around LA because all the "wannabe Takumis" go race there every weekend. And he won't tell anyone else where it is because he doesn't wan anyone else going out and wrecking (a lot of people do on that hill).
