Default 1996 Accord EX Brake Problem

Okay, so I started replacing lines and such on the accord today and ran into a problem with bleeding the brakes. You pump the pedal up with the ignition off, and the pedal is firm. You turn the car on and it goes to the floor ? I was thinking master cylinder, but I just want to see if anyone else has had this problem. I replaced both back brake lines on the car. It used to have ABS But the kid i bought it off of removed the ABS Block. Is ABS and NON-ABS master cylinders similar ??

1996 Honda Accord EX
F22B1 Vtec Motor
ABS Removed

Thanks in advance

Brandon

Actually, it sounds like the "removed abs block" could be the problem. Somebody may need to correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that block serves as the proportioning valve in the brake system and if it's gone, ain't no telling where the pressure is going.

Well i figured it out.. it wasnt because the ABS block was removed. I only worked on the back brakes because those were the only lines that were bad. It ended up being an air pocket in the front passenger side caliper. So all is well now. All thats left on the accord is new tires, alignment, and drivers side front wheel bearing. Then I can start really spending money on it.. total i've spent so far is around $600.00 total including the price of the car and title transfer . hehe

Yup, anytime you crack open the brakes you have to bleed all four wheels. Glad you figured out the problem.

Well, you dont have to bleed all 4 corners every time. The kid I got the car off of must have done something to the front brakes and or removed the caliper or something. 9/10 times if your working on one side of the car *ie. rear brakes* you can just bleed the rear brakes and will be Ok. I was a certified mechanic before I got my job on an oil rig, and I've done many brake jobs on one side .. either front, or back. and only bled those brakes. The only time you have to bleed all 4 corners is if you replace all the brakes on all 4 corners. If the kid would have just told me he removed the caliper then i would have known that it had an air pocket and all would have been ok. Well, the way I do brakes to is when I cut lines I make sure that i put a plug in the master cylinder and then replace the line, screw the plug out and connect the line.. I'm sure if you let the fluid completely drain you may have to bleed all 4 corners then. Like I said, I've never had a problem doing it the way I do brakes.

You got air in the lines. Check the level of fluid in the master cylinder. If it got too low, then you might have sucked in air. Also check underneath the car for any leaks in any of the brake lines. Also check all of the joints and connections for any leaks and make sure the bleeder screws are tight. if you have a cracked line, eventually it will pop and you will have no brakes at all, so find the leak and fix it FAST!!!

Good thing you got the brake problem figured out in a jiffy.. My brakes still aren't fixed yet and the master cylinder too. It's been two weeks already..
