The CEL works because the car has been told a malfunction has happened over the last 2 times you have started the car. If you turn it on and then off, then back on, off, and on again and the CEL is still there you have another malfunction which needs to be read by a code reader. The CEL should turn off itself when you have a problem eliminated.

However, on topic. You can disconnect the battery for 30 seconds or pull the ECU fuse out for 30 seconds.

To rest ecu fully, take battery cable off for 30 seconds then put it back on, start car & let it idle for 10minutes then take it for a drive. Thats what i was advised by a Honda dealer.

The original question was resetting the check engine light...not the ecu.

In my civic (and from I have been told all 2001 and up Honda's) you reset the check engine light by pressing the trip odometer, holding it in, turning the key to on...not start, and continuing to hold it for 10 seconds. It will flash a few times and then go out. Turn off the ignition and then start the car...it should not come on.

Its the ECU that commands the engine light to come on, so resettin the ecu also in turn resets the engine light. They're both linked.

Yes...but why reset the ECU if it is not necessary...it stores more information than DTC's...and you can cause more harm than good, especially in a higher mileage car. So just reset the light.

Or am I the only one that when a light bulb blows in the closet, I just replace the bulb...not rewire the house.

This is your matinance (< I can't spell this morning, a bit tired. sorry) The CEL has to be reset as stated above; pulling the fuse or removing the negative battery terminal.

The matinance required ( main req.) light will come on at 10,000 for your tune up 50,000 and 100,000 miles. Unless your car does it every 6,000 to 10,000 for oil changes. The S2000 is 10,000 miles but my EP3 was at the intervals ^.
