Hi all.
I have a '97 Accord EX that had discolored trans oil when I bought it. Shifting was a little too soft, too. I had it machine-flushed and it works perfectly now. Problem is I recently noticed the trans is always wet on the seam where the two case halves meet. I can't tell if it is dripping down to that low spot or the gasket is leaking. There are no oil spots on the driveway at all, so it could be leaking only while driving. Does anyone know of other places the trans oil can leak from in that area? Any comon problems? I suspect it in fact is the case leaking, but reluctant to admit it. Plus I don't trust mechanics much. Anyone know how difficult the task is to overhaul it? If too complicated, what would it reasonably cost? Last edited by gxgman; 04-23-2008 at 02:15 AM. |

I actually have mechanical experience as a fleet mechanic. Although nothing like working on Japanese cars. Long ago I rebuilt American transmissions, so I know about the special tools needed to overhaul them. Japanese cars are slightly different and I don't want to get stuck needing any unavailable parts to assemble it once I have it torn down. I have been unsuccessful finding individual parts for them.
And I don't have a resale license to get all the parts a shop can get at a reasonable price. |

Get a free diagnostic at one of the transmission shops near you. I think Aamoco does that. They can tell you why it's leaking and then you can decide if you want to fix it or leave it with them.
The trick with shops is to find one with people you trust and build up a relationship with them. If they like you, they will do work for cheap or free and when you get stuck, they can help you out. My shop has saved my butt more than once an they will go above and beyond the normal service to help me out with a problem.
