Default Battery Dead on my 95 Accord?

Was driving my accord around for a fair amount of time yesterday, went to century city from hollywood and back thru santa monica traffic at rush hour... car did just fine...

get in tonite to take a friend home, and turn the key, nothing happens.

No lights on the dash or anything.... so i get a friend to give me a jump.... a few minutes of charging allows the car to start.... so i drive around the block long enough for the motor to warm up...

get back home, turn the car off, and back on.nothing.

Dead battery which is obvious, but why so sudden? Do batteries just decided to stop working over night?

I went out of town for 2 weeks prior to these outings, but since I've been back, the car has been driven alot in the week i've been back...

so what gives? is my alternator going out??

(i hope not)

Thanks guys for the help

Your alternator might have kicked the bucket. Easy way to check: while the car is running w/ all accessories off (i.e. lights, ac, radio, etc.), check the battery voltage w/ a multimeter. If it's < 13v, then your alternator is dead. If it's >= 14v, then your alternator is ok. If it's between 13-14v, then your alternator may be weak.

If you want to check your battery: check the battery voltage while somebody starts your car w/ all accessories off. If voltage dips below 10v, then your battery may be on its way out.

OTOH,

If your battery voltage doesn't dip at all, you may have a loose cable which could cause the symptoms you describe...

I would go back to checking your alternator. Auto Zone and Napa will check your battery for free if you take it to them...they will also charge it for you.

I Would have to agree, my alternator did the same thing, but did you leave any electronics on while your car wasnt started? i hope for you that your alternator is good because those things are expensive, like 100$+, and let me tell you, putting in a new alternator is a bitc*. So i would look into getting a new alternator

get a pro to inspect the problem, you wouldnt want to be buying a new alternator and finding out that it wasnt the alternator

Yea i would recomend that, plus i beleive its very very hard to install an alternator because you have to lift the engine out of the car, but im not shure

ok... in my opinion u should first check the battery cabels/terminals. make sure if its not dirty on top. ( if the battery has like nasty dirt on top, on terminals clean it with water and baking soda mixture. Second thing, make sure u dont have the parasitic draw. meaning look if every accessory is off once the engine is turned off. ur trunk and glove compartment light as well (happens alot on hondas). Check if the alternator belt on tight. If that wont work. Go and get ur Alternator checked. if its bad, buy new alternator with warranty and put it on. And dont listen if someone says its hard. lol its very easy. Someone said u gotta lift ur engine? haha bull. open ur hood , and it seattin right there. But b4 u start,- disconnect ur battery. I think 2 or 3 bolts holding it. when u take it off , make sure the belt is in good condition, if not replace it. put the new alternator in , make sure the belt tight on all pulleys. And last step connect ur batterycabels back on... Thats it. This gonna take u ummmm 15 minutes the most.

The one way I know to check the alternator gets mixed reviews.... Charge your battery, turn the car on. Then with it running, disconnect your negetive battery terminal. If the car dies, your alternator needs replaced.

+1 for Jessica, check your belts... Ive had more than one problem like this be solved by tightening the belts, or buying a new bolt of the one that holds the alternator tight is loose.
