'89 Accord timing/overheating issue - HondaClub.com

I just replaced the timing belt and had trouble lining up the cam sprocket with the crank. Should the sprocket "up" indicator be 12 o'clock position or parallel with the piston cylinder (basically 12 o'clock position but pointing slightly toward the front of the vehicle by one tooth)? The engine lacks power at lower rpms, stalls, and overheats....all symptoms of improper timing. Aslo, I do not have the VECI (vehicle emissions control information) sticker, how can I obtain the timing information and other things that would have? Thank you for your help.

I've answered my own question. I went back and moved the timing belt one tooth (from the 12 o'clock position to a position in line with the piston cylinders). This solved the problem, the car now functions properly and there isn't an overheating issue anymore. A mechanic told me though, if the timing belt was off even one tooth on a single overhead cam, the car should not run at all. This was obviously not the case for the motor in question. The motor did run with improper valve positioning and I could not tell until the motor was run under a load.

Now, does anyone know how I can get Vehicle Emissions Control Information (VECI) for my '89 honda accord LXI? Thank you.

i have a 86 lxi hatchback and i could take a pic of the sticker and send it to you. it might help i dont think there are too many changes made thru those model years.

The easiest trick is to look at local used car lots. Find one like yours and take along a camera. Go up to the vehicle, and if a salemans comes up just act as if your interested. Pop the hood and take a pic. That is it. If you do not find one near by let me know. There are over 100 used car lots in my area. I could probably find one and email you the info.
