well, I gotta say... there is no reason you cannot sound good with a low budget... just buy used gear. I have a system built up on virtually all used gear - and it bumps. You will be surprized to find what people are selling cheap....

Kicker ZR120 (sweet fookin amp here)... $50 (I paid 10 too much but it came with the remote unit that SiGirl describes)...
Alpine V12 - (4 channel, C-L-E-A-N) -- $60 bucks
Sony Head Unit (cheepie from circuit city) - $80
Dual Voice Coil 10" subs in box (some cheap brand, say extreme on the cone)... $65 bucks....

Just look on local boards for used gear. Ask the person if they have ever gone into "thermal shutdown"... if they dont know what it is , ask them "has it ever been playing (bumping along) and shut off by itself"..... do your best to determine if they are being honest (best to ask face to face)... and always low ball. Used gear is not really worth much -- so you should not really have to pay more than the $50-$80 range for a quality piece of gear.

When buying used, stay with big name brands (alpine, kicker, memphis, JL Audio, Boston Acoustics, Polk Audio) if you can - they wil give you the best results. For the door speakers and deck speakers - it's best to pop the $100 for new "fresh" speakers... with a good amp you dont have to buy anytying bud the "mid" quality alpine/polk/kicker......

IMHO

P.S. how do you get a member tag?
