It's just like "how to properly position you seat." It's personal preferance. I drive semi for a living, and I have a total of 7 mirrors to adjust. If you take 10 drivers, each one will have them aimed different.
The one main problem is the fact that most people share a car with their spouse. Usually, the spouse sits closer to the steering wheel than the Male. Generally, most people are to lazy to re-adjust, so eventually the mirrors find a "happy medium" so both can see in the mirrors. I have no fancy article to prove my theory, but that is how the "see the side of the car" method has evolved.
It's personal preference. I personally, love the little stick on blind spot mirrors. Especially on my larger vehicles.
