I just used a boomslang harness and would highly recommend -- took me 10 minutes to do the full install. Not only are you going to need a basic knowledge of what the car is doing, but also the programming for the chip and how to use it.

Find some people in your area who have the system you are going to purchase and have them walk you through programming for that unit -- I had a hard time figuring what they wanted me to put in what cell, but was able to figure it out after playing with it for an hour or so. You can also find a lot of material online to help you out in terms of understanding the mappings -- how they work and whats best for you.

You will need to take this and have it tuned and make sure to buy a wideband AFR meter so you know when you are running lean and when you arent, otherwise you might dammage something.

Good luck!

(Shameless plug -- dont forget to vote for ride of the month because we need more voters to get active in the process)
