you may be looking at a bad ignition control module too. They act up when they get hot. I've seen coils do the same thing, but its a little less common. The crappy thing is that the ignition control module on that car is expensive if I remember right. You can take that part off and get it tested though. It may be worthwhile to buy a new distributor with the module instead of just the module by itself, its usually not too much more.

You've got a 4L60 transmission in your camaro which is one of the most common trannys put in a rear wheel drive gm from the 90s. What I would do in your case is to change the filter and put some new fluid in it. You should drop out about 4 qts from the pan, put in 3 qts of dexron 3 and 1 qt of lucas transmission treatment in it. then try it again and see if it fixes the problem. If that doesn't fix it, it may be cheaper to put a junkyard transmission in the car. I didn't check your location before I started writing this, but if you're in the southeast and the problem persists, let me know and I'll put you in touch with a couple of people that deal with that stuff and you can get a warranty through.
Oh, one other thought, what kind of shop did you take it to? the reason I ask is I'm on the shop counter at a mid sized dealership, we've got 16 techs and only 2 of them are qualified to work on a transmission.
Always remember, if you're gonna take your car to a shop, take it to a specialist.
