Very common misconception.... Unless your car is tuned for a higher octane, its not going to do much for you.
For example, if your car requires 87, that is what it is tuned for, if you put something higher, such as 93, it MAY run more efficiantly and cleaner, how ever you run into the problems of pinging, pre ignition, etc...
My car requires 91, if i put 87 in, my car WILL NOT run. If i put 93, it will not make my car faster than if i put 91 on it. And if i put 89 in it will ping and knock as well as 87.
Like i said, in order for it to make a differnce, you have to be tuned for it.
As for using a higher octane gas, even though it is more expensive, it actually lasts longer, higher octane gas burns slower becuase less gas is needed for combustion in the engine.
