If it was something like the oil or clutch then all the gears would have trouble. Since it's only having problems in reverse, it sounds like a couple of the teeth on the gear/synchro have broken. So you need a rebuild. My advice would be to find a junkyard car with low(ish) miles and the same trans as you and get it swapped in. It will probably end up being cheaper than a rebuild. Get a quote first and do some quick research and whichever is cheaper, go for that.
